Money Talks

Publishing is a business. At the end of the day, books have to make money.

In cold reality, that’s what a lot of authors are actually thinking when they’re reluctant to write transgender characters and books. It doesn’t sell.

That’s also not true.

In May and August of this year, I released two transgender books. The young adult release outsold every other young adult book I’ve ever written – that is to say, all of its cosy, safe, gay counterparts – within the first four months of its little life. The adult release outsold every other book I’ve ever written, both young adult and adult, within one month. For the first time in my career, I breached the four-figure royalty mark. And I published both with a small press, with limited reach, and unashamedly focusing on the m/m market.

They sold. Big time.

At the end of day, we can talk about why rep is important until the cows come home. But without directing you towards some of that rep, how can we say we’ve really done anything for the trans authors and trans books already out there?

So here’s a list of some of trans authors we know of, and some trans fiction recs by Will Arthur Maurici. It’s not exhaustive. Some will have been missed, because we’re only human and don’t pretend for a minute to have found or read all the trans fiction out there. Some authors have deliberately been missed if they’re not out as such to the public. But it’s a start.

So be an ally. Buy a book – either one of those named below, or from one of the transgender authors trying to make it in this cis-dominated, very undiverse industry.

Boost.
